In 2024, I arrived in Australia with two suitcases. It was the first time I had truly started life overseas.
I expected language, coursework and exams to be the hardest parts. Instead, the small problems of everyday life were often the most difficult.
After moving in, I needed a desk but did not know where to buy one. I wanted to meet students in my course but had no useful entry point. I often learned about campus events only after seeing someone else's photos.
A student beside me asked, “Do you know anyone who wants to buy a bicycle?”At another table, someone was searching a group chat for help collecting a parcel.By the window, a new student searched several chats for something happening that weekend.
That day, I sat in a cafe watching people who were strangers even though they studied at the same university. We were all looking for someone: a buyer, a helper, a companion or a student who knew the answer.
If a campus is already a community, why does it not have a digital space of its own?
That day, I wrote UniLivo on my laptop. I wanted students to see what was happening on campus, who was selling something, who needed help, where events were taking place and which people had a trusted campus identity and history.
We do not lack information or people willing to help.What we lack is a place where needs and trust can meet. UniLivo restores connections that would otherwise be missed, so people on the same campus do more than simply pass one another.
